Preparing for Mewtwo

With Mewtwo just around the corner, trainers everyone are preparing their team counters. We have some information for you here that should help you along the way and maximize your damage and survivability too. Ideally we are using best counter examples (Tyranitar, Houndoom, Scizor, Gyarados, Pinsir and even Gengar).

WHOS THE BEST?

Tyranitar rates #1 in this list simply because of two reasons; he's a tank (dark resists his physic attacks, assuming he will be using psychic moves) and he does great STAB damage (dark pokemon with dark moves) which is the best against Mewtwo. The only time Tyranitar would NOT be good against him is if he has Focus Blast (a fighting move, which is super effective against dark type pokemon). In that case, Gyarados would be the best choice

Dodging at this point is not recommend, it's MANDATORY.

Assuming the dodge glitch is fixed (causes trainers to remain out of battle and unable to hit if they dodge an attack that would kill the pokemon, until the boss does his next charged attack, thus losing tons of dps time on the boss and making him harder to kill in time). If you want to effectively kill Mewtwo, you will want to dodge his charged attacks (only) when battling him. Keeping your most powerful Pokemon (the front runners) alive longer will give you better dps results. The only time this doesn't apply is if you have two sets/teams of pokemon that are super effective against him.

HOW DO WE FIGHT MEWTWO?

It is confirmed with recent posts from Beta EX Raid Invites that we get invited to fight him at a gym we've defeated a raid at within a recent time (most likely between 24 hours to 3 days). No word on which gym it chooses but the raid seems to last for the same two hours that all raids last. Not any word on how much preparation we will have for it either or if we can do more than one.  Basically all that is still up in the air at the moment.

We do see confirming screenshots of the raid invites and how they are formatted.

They show the starting and ending time of the Mewtwo Raid (always two hours long), the date of the event, the Gym name, city and state it is located, along with a Google Maps button to click for directions to it.

Check out more of this info in the pic below.

We also have the catch percentages for Mewtwo (shown above). As you can see it's much higher than our other Legendary Bosses (mainly because Mewtwo is harder to encounter with specific raid times with no unlimited access like the other Legendary Pokemon before him).

Check in for more updates on the Mewtwo Raid system and how it works. For now, check out a video below from one of the first Mewtwo Raid Encounters outside any event.

DARK TYPE is a Pokemon and Moveset type that is super effective against Ghost and Psychic.

BUG TYPE is a Pokemon and Moveset type that is super effective against Grass, Poison and Psychic.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

SHADOW CLAW

SHADOW BALL

#4

PROS: Super high attack, Stab damage on top of that and super effective against Mewtwo.

CONS: He's a glass cannon. He will be one shot by Mewtwo's first charged attack. If you can manage to dodge, Gengar might be one of the best choices.

#5

SHADOW BALL

CONFUSION

PROS: Mewtwo in general is a very powerful Pokemon with very high attack (one of the highest in the game). Plus his charged move is a Ghost Type move (super effective). He will also take less damage against himself (psychic so he can tank).

CONS: Not going to do alot of damage compared to the Pokemon above because of the resistance against psychic.

MEWTWO BREAKPOINTS

Breakpoints are great to know because they help you determine how much you should power up your Mewtwo Counters (Pokemon) before it starts to reach a breakpoint where powering up your Pokemon won't make much more of a difference in damage. This can save you lots of time, dust and candy.

SUMMARY

All in all, your main focus here is to build a nice Tyranitar team for your Confusion/Psychic moveset Mewtwo. Since not many have a Ttar team, they will use fillers like Gyarados and Gengar which works great. One thing we have to remember to do is DODGE! Dodge charged attacks and keep your most powerful Pokemon on the front ground longer before resorting to your next set of Pokemon.
